A Windy Day at Semerwater
We did a great walk yesterday around Semerwater. We went from Countersett to Stalling Busk Old Church, over to Marsett and up the hill for a brilliant view over Wensleydale, Raydaleside and Bishopdale.
The weather held and we had a look round the Old Church, where sheep lay around in the ancient graveyard and the old arches hold fast thanks to some recent resoration work.
A nearby sign also showed the demarcation of the Semerwater Site fo Special Scientific Interest, which includes part of the lake itself – the second largest natural lake in Yorkshire (the largest natural lake in Yorkshire is Hornsea Mere). The lake is 250m above sea level and houses some rare species of flora and fauna.

We also saw plenty of mushrooms out and some unidentified birds of prey. They were larger than kestrels, smaller than kites, flying in a group of about 6, had white heads and red backs / wings. We thought they may be juveniles but a quick check on the Park authority website suggests that they may have been common buzzards.

After the walk we popped over to Simonstone Hall for a coffee. This place is a hidden gem. The rooms are from £110 for bed and breakfast off-season. It’s beautiful outside and in. There are sweeping views of the dale from the bar and the service is great. They also do the cheapest afternoon coffee in Wensleydale with a large pot only setting you back £6. It serves about 7 or 8 cups.
Another tip is the George and Dragon in Aysgarth. They serve dinner from 5.30pm and have reliable pub grub. Tip – fish & chips or gammon & egg. Early bird main £9.95.
