Basshunter -DotA with explanation, lyrics, English translations and videos
Explanation
I love this Swedish-language number from Basshunter. It’s catchy, it’s sexy and it’s surprisingly about a computer game called “Defence of the Ancients”. Who writes dance songs this geeky? The game is an off-shoot of Warcraft III [correction: Warcraft III is a real-time strategy game that is online but has a large amount of user-made maps such as DotA for example] and the reference to “creeping” (creepar) is about the fighter ships in the computer game called “creeps” [correction: creeps refers to the in-game AI monsters that are killed for gold and experience points, and trivial items]. Ventrilo is the name of VOIP-style software that the DotA players use to talk to each other (see how he makes a telephone gesture when singing “venten” (ventrilo)).
The guy who dances and sings in the Basshunter videos is pure Euro-pop. He often looks like American Psycho with his long slicked hair and unnaturally blue eyes in white suits doing techno-dances. World of Warcraft games are seriously cool in northern Europe -take a look at the girls he’s dancing with!
We promise to get back to politics and travel eventually but after a week of doing highly technical and boring website work we ended up finding a series of amusing videos -this one included. See below the videos for the lyrics and translations.
I prefer this second version which includes the best Euro-dancing you’ve ever seen anyone get away with -just look at his big red shoes! It’s also a better musical version.

As a Warcraft III player myself I have to correct you and make some distinctions between Warcraft III and World of Warcraft. They are completely seperate in terms of gaming, they may share the same ‘lore’ and such but World of Warcraft is an MMORPG and Warcraft III is a real-time strategy game that is online but has a large amount of user-made maps such as DotA for example.
And when you say “fighter ships?” are you referring to Starcraft II or something? As there is nothing labeled that in Warcraft III nor World of Warcraft. Creeps refers to the in-game AI monsters that are killed for gold and experience points, and trivial items. In terms of DotA, they serve the same purpose.

I’ve owned a copy of Warcraft III since it came out and have been on board with the DotA Allstars map from the first edition to the latest version, 6.51, and I have to say that in terms of what I think he means by the song the first is better. Yes the second may be more musical, yes it may have better dancing and general acting. But the song seems to be a song to the gamer, pure and simple. The second one might be “better” but the first makes one proud to be a gamer.

for those that dont know, all the refrains in italics are actually made by the game. those arent just people saying that stuff, units in the game say those lines. “i hear ya man” “lets get it on” “dont worry be happy” and such.

I just thought Basshunter had dreamt up some funny English phrases to spout throughout the song. In the same way that most English people know only a few key phrases in French or German such as: “Yes, that was very tasty thankyou” or “I like to go to the beach”.

DotA is not a game, it is called defense of the ancients yes but its a mod for World of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne..
Cheers Adam, I was under the impression it was a map for Warcraft 3 and that that is separate from World of Warcraft. But then again, I don’t know anything about WoW at all! I just think Basshunter dota is a good song.
This is one of the reasons I wouldn’t have mentioned the DotA origins had I written this post – I’m scared of people who know more about a subject than I do…

You are all nerds. The video’s were both clever in their own right and the music is also very good. Most of you wouldn’t know that though since clearly you spend all your time analyzing video games and the slight differences between them that the majority of the world don’t know and don’t care about.

Thanks for the comments Adam G. If you had seen the original post Linda wrote, you would have known that neither she nor I know anything about Warcraft at all.
The reason we put the song up was because its good music, as simple as that.
But, in mentioning the songs origins (as its swedish, and dota was something the majority of people were asking about), Linda opened a can of worms – all the “nerds” came in to put her straight.
To be honest, I couldn’t care less what defence of the ancients means, but I can appreciate why people who spend most of their waking hours playing it would be irritated with our glaring errors.
Wow does that guy act creepy in the 2nd video.

both of these vidoes are good, and i really love the song. and it’s nice to hear because i speak swedish and english both fluently so i could understand what he was singing without clarification although it was helpful that you mentioned what dota was and all the other terminology in the song, i thought he just didn’t know how to speak swedish very well because i didnt recognize dota and venten, but now i realize its cause they were warcraft terms or whatever that shit is called haha

I think he says “venten”, because “-en” is a definite article in swedish, so “venten” means “the Vent”
I like the orignal better in that the 2nd is focused on this hot chick (no offence) & there’s only a few hints around that it has to do with Wow. But in the 1st one as soon as the song starts up you can tell it’s about a game. Plus I miss the parent at the start of the song. Thus why I have only his orignal song & all his other ones on my music player.

Well besides everyone arguing about the concept of the song. Overall, though the topic of the song was a little rediculous, you have to give him credit not many people could make a song about a game and sitting around and playing it and have millions of people love it. also, to the DotA fans stop trying to correct people that have no concept of the game cause they therefore don’t care and we’ll probabally still have no idea what your talking about after you correct them.

I am a player of Dota, honestly the second version is really stupid cause she just blows in the enemies ear and they die…. Basshunter definitely impersonated himself as a good player in Dota…. I like the first version better cause it was more like a clan match on vent… But the first one throws me off too cause you don’t need vent if your LANing with 6 of your friends….
Not to mention, I loved how they were at the Blizzard convention and he was on stage at the show singing Dota. I saw him two ngihjts ago in Naperville, IL

just a random observation, but this song sounds exactly like Pretty Rave Girl by DJ S3rl, when I first heard this one, I thought they were the same song till I read the lyrics here.
That’s probably because its the same tune. Interestingly, they refer to Aylar Lie as the ‘pretty rave girl’ so this track might be about her??? Aylar Lie is the girl who features in Basshunter’s videos.

Ok. Those of you insulting the gamers here saying “get a life” and whatnot need to realize that the existence of this music video is proof positive that gamers are now mainstream and cool. At least in Europe.
I’m a gamer, but I’m also an engineer, a father, and a husband.
I have more of a “life” than anyone who makes that played-out “get a life” comment.
And frankly, non-gamers are just people who are BAD at games and use that superiority bullshit to cover it up. If you’re bad at games you’re probably bad at learning skills, and therefore, bad at life.

Wow ya i use to be a pro dota player and he even got the lyrics rong its were pushing and pwning ….. the p is sclent and prounounced owning and wow is like an ORPG like a fable or oblivion for xbox but on the computer and wc3 is an rts and its a stratagy like comand and conquer and when he says stuff like creeper it means farming creeps for gold and push means push there team back with a group of people in the lane to kill stuff like the tower… btw dota blows its a waist of time enless u in the tournements to win cash

Just a little late question…since this song used Warcraft III quotes in it, such as Rokhan for the troll quotes, and the Pandaren quote “Have one on the house!”, I feel that the second quote, “I feel you man” should be “I fear you man” to match up with Rokhan.
They sound similar, so I guess it’s just a fault of the ears.

Did everyone miss the explanation about how Ventrilo is a voice over IP solution that allows gamers to speak to one another while in a game. He says they are sitting in Ventrilo because they all have headsets on speaking to one another while playing DOTA.
Actually the italicized words that are being spoken “Let’s get it on” “Don’t worry be happy” etc… are spoken by a character called Shadow Shaman or RHASTA. He is basically a Rastafarian and that’s why they are spoken in a Caribbean accent.
