Celebrate Safer Internet Day by Purchasing Swords Online

Today is “Safer Internet Day 2009″ according to the Internet Watch Foundation. The day is organised by the European Commission and Insafe, the European network of e-safety awareness nodes. It focuses on risks to children online. Anyone who saw Watchdog last night will know that Ebay has changed its policy on the sale of knives online after the vociferous sleuths at BBC managed to buy a plastic knife online. There were some flick knives and disguised pens as well. The police officer in the interview dutifully branded the items “shocking”.

We should, however, bear in mind that some crimes are committed with the old standard kitchen knives and it would be almost impossible to ban sales of cutlery – especially when Jamie Oliver is campaigning hard to Get The Kids Cooking. It’s quite hard to peel celeriac with chopsticks. The World’s Greatest Blog was quite amused, however, to discover that an up-market military formal-wear retailer was selling swords online without half the hoo-haa experienced by Ebay:

However, don’t go waving your Passing-Out Parade pictures around on Facebook because the police might call round and caution you – whether it’s illegal or not.
