Driving Interstate, Australia
We finally managed to exit Victoria last week, as we headed into New South Wales over the Alpine Way road… since then, we have managed to notch another state when we arrived in Australian Capital Territory (ACT) where we are currently, in Canberra.
The blog has not been updated largely due to the remoteness of the past couple of weeks!
We’ve finally experienced a change in the weather which has involved rain. Actually, to be precise, we had the most crazy storm I’ve ever experienced the other evening. Having been in Canberra for all of 8 hours, we decided to go out for a few beers, and were playing pool against a couple of local students, when a massive hailstorm hit outside.
It was a big storm, and the road quickly became a river of ice outside. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a camera with us, but I managed to get a shot with the mobile phone, though I’ve not got the equipment to get that picture online at present.
Anyway, when we returned to our tent, we found it to be in a rather unkempt condition: the top sheet had totally blown off and was only connected by a thread, and there was a foot of water in the bottom – where our sleeping bag and mattress were. Feeling tired, we decided to sleep in the car and to wait until morning, and lucidity, would allow us to sort things out. We had also left our washing on the line, and the storm had made the washing line collapse entirely, forcing us to rewash everything, so the whole day was a bit of a pain…
In fact, nothing went well yestereday, as we sorted through the wreckage of Tuesday nights storm. We managed to re-wash everything, which was pretty tiresome as we’d done it all the day before; dry out everything (including my only pair of trainers) that had been drenched in the destroyed tent; and generally repair everything… So, we didn’t spend the day as we’d planned, sightseeing and looking for work (we need to get some before our money gets too low).
Currently the plan is to head on up to Sydney after having a day out in Canberra today. Originally, we were going to try to stay here for a while, but the events of the past couple of days, as well as the feeling that this commonwealth capital may be lacking slightly in creativity, have made us reconsider and entertain the idea of moving on. In fact, we probably will. This, despite the fact that Sydney is the only place with the poisonous and aggresive funnel web spider that Linda is so keen to avoid.
I’ll try to get some details about our stay in the alps online soon, along with some of our photos and videos from the trip, though there’s a lot to sort through! The potential of having to get a job soon strikes as a less distinct pluspoint so, in the hope that it may be avoided, I just need a pound – or dollar – to prevent this!
New Videos March 2008!
We’ve finally got round to putting up the videos. Here’s what we did when we got bored in Canberra -drove to the Sydney Harbour Bridge:
