EU Takes Action Against Phorm
The World’s Greatest Blog has been raising concerns for some time regarding the privacy infringements potentially being committed by Phorm and its clients; BT, Talk Talk and Virgin broadband. It seems now that the EU is the only body capable of defending UK citizen’s right to privacy. UK privacy law is so broadly drawn, its institutions so toothless and its politicians so blasé, that IP providers could soon watch our every move without anyone ever raising an eyebrow.
Thankfully the EU are showing the backbone which the Information Commissioner lacks:
I believe that Europeans… must have the right to control how their personal information is used. European privacy rules are crystal clear. A person’s information can only be used with their prior consent. We cannot give up this basic principle, and have all our exchanges monitored, surveyed and stored, in exchange for a promise of ‘more relevant’ advertisements! I will not shy away from taking action where an EU country falls short of this duty.
Ms Viviane Reding, the European Union’s Commissioner for Information Society and Media
The EU are taking steps to enforce UK compliance with the more stringent EU privacy laws - which the UK is already signed up to.
