Extra Second at Midnight

Big BenTonight is New Year’s Eve but because the world’s atomic clocks are more accurate than the Earth, we will get an extra second added onto 2008. That’s one more second to savour the year gone by before facing another annum. The countdown will actually go like this: 11:58, 11:59, 11:60, 00:00.  Time providers of mobile phones, digital TV and other time products will all be adjusted to reflect the change of daylight rather than the actual length of seconds and minutes. Since the 1970′s, atomic clocks have been adjusted to reflect the alterations in time due to the year being slightly more than 365.25 days. Leap days account for some of the extra, but leap seconds are also required. If left unchecked, an extra hour would be evident in 600 years time.
