Points to remember
- Soft sand is sometimes hard to get through;
- The tide dictates when you can drive on the beach – get a current tide times sheet and only drive 2 hours either side of low tide. It is possible to drive slightly longer before or after, but it is also possible to get swept away by the sea, which would not be a nice way to spend your holiday;
- Dingos are wild dogs and have been known to kill or maim children. Be careful when you come across them and don’t leave children unattended. Don’t provoke them either. Never turn your back on them, just back away slowly and maintain eye contact.
- Fraser Island has some beautiful lakes – go for a swim;
- Take your own food and supplies (including beers or wine if you want a drink) as the prices on Fraser Island are extraordinarily high: over $5 for a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar;
- Don’t swim in the ocean as there are man-eating sharks and ridiculously strong currents. Not even surfers venture into the ocean on Fraser Island, for good reason.
Otherwise, Fraser Island is the best sandpit you’re ever likely to play in.
