Google.com ‘This Site May Harm Your Computer’ Messages Everywhere!

Just ten minutes ago Google searches began displaying a “This Site May Harm Your Computer” message, which then prevents onwards access to the searched for website – including searches for Google.com! See the screenshot I grabbed below – this basically means that it is impossible to access any websites via a Google search:

Google.com - according to Google.com "This Site May Harm Your Computer!"

Google.com - according to Google.com "This Site May Harm Your Computer!"

The funny thing is, though, that when you click on the “helpful” warning Google deliver, that page returns a 404 page not found. Someone has either turned on a function that isn’t working, or Google’s wheels have fallen off! I very much doubt this will last long, so try it yourself – have you experienced this strange anomoly (we tried through a number of IPs and proxies and it was the same for all Google searches we have done!).

Those of us who rely on Google and other organic searches should be worried by this – funnily enough the ads still open just fine…

UPDATE – it looks as though quite a few people have been noticing this (obviously, we’re all using Digg to find stuff now…):

Digg users report Google's lunacy!

  1. I’ve got the exact same problem over here in the Netherlands. All websites appear to be harmful and the ‘Safe Browsing diagnostic page’ leads to a ’502 Server Error’ page. Weird!

  2. News searches and image searches are still working, so as long as you’re not looking for information you should be ok!

  3. Google is now working again… oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Just goes to show how well Google works that so many people noticed a fault within seconds and it was fixed within 15 minutes!

I reckon we’ve made worse errors than that which have lasted longer if we’re honest.

  4. Job openings at google!!!

I think that it is time for us to apply for a job at google (because almost certainly someone will get fired…) Big oportunity!!!
