Hypocrisy in World Politics

Politicians have their reasons for turning a blind eye in some cases an screaming blue murder at others. But as this blog acts as a soapbox, I am going to list some anomalies in reporting and political emphasis in Britain:

  • Zimbabwe does not have free and fair elections
  • Bahrain has had two elections in 33 years and the King’s appointed upper chamber holds more power than the elected lower chamber.
  • Saudi Arabia operates a system of absolute monarch, albeit with a system of consultation of high ranking clergy, royals and “ministers”. Saudi Arabia does not have any national elections or plans to hold them. It held some local elections in 2005 but only men could vote and they were only voting for half of the positions – the rest were appointed by royals.

Who is worse on the scale of infringing people’s political freedom?

  • Iran is developing a nuclear weapons programme but does not currently have sufficient means to launch a fully developed warhead.
  • Israel, with the help of France, has nuclear weapons.

Why is the USA talking about a possible raid on Iran by Israel being “destabilising”? Surely being the only non-Muslim majority country in the Middle East and the only nuclear capable one is destabilising enough without launching attacks on the only independent military power in the region.

  • China is the world’s second most polluting country despite having the world’s largest population. It also has a poor record on human rights.
  • The USA is the world’s most polluting country despite being the world’s third most populous country. It has a poor record on human rights for non-Americans.

The USA should stop whingeing about the pollution of third world countries and get on with the job of going green. It has little moral high ground to take a stand on stolen elections, torture and unlawful invasions.
