Israel Hits Gaza at Christmas

Gaza Under Fire December 2008

While the Western world was finishing off the turkey and stuffing, Israel thought it might be a good time to invade the Gaza Strip. After four days of aerial strikes, 383 Palestinians are dead and 800 are wounded. 62 of the dead have been confirmed as being civilian. There have been 4 Israeli deaths.

It’s not even as though Israel is numb to the religious holidays – Hannukah was on 22nd December in 2008, but despite the festival of light, no peace has come to the Holy Land. There have been protests at the Israeli embassy in London and EU leaders are meeting to discuss a response but thanks to the holidays, most people don’t even know what’s going on.

Israeli warplanes have been attacking reported rocket installations and, sure enough, rockets were fired into Israel in retaliation. Would a Ghandi-esque non-violent resistance tactic be more successful or would Israel simply vanquish an unarmed Gaza strip?
