North Stradbroke Island -Straddie
A must see when in Brisbane. We went over this Saturday 14th July with the 4X4 on a whim. Whilst avoiding the toll bridge on the M1 we ended up on the road to Cleveland and decided that the $116 to take our car to the island was worth it -once we saw the tourist map with all the off-road tracks on. (Walk-on water taxi: $17 each) However, the island proved to be more than we had bargained for once we got stuck in the deep sand.
After a walk to the peaceful Blue Lake and Tortoise Lagoon we went to the Gorge Walk and Whale Rock where we spotted several pods of dolphins leaping about. We first spotted them zooming through the waves and i thought we had seen sharks until they starting doing backflips. Apparently a whale was on the cards but there was nothing to see within 5 km.
We finished the day by watching the local rugby. The local side lost and we accompanied the winning side on the ferry home. Watching the sunset over the shallow green waters of Moreton Bay was both romantic and memorable.
Two tips for travellers though: banking facilities on the Island are limited so take cash with you and permits are required for 4WD-ing on the beach.
