Rain, Rain, Rain

Watching the Countryfile weather forecast for this week on I-player, I was quite amused at how little variation there was on the word “rain”.

How many ways can you say it’s going to rain, all week, everywhere? The weatherman looked positively relieved to be able to report snow.

I knew the rain was bad this morning when it was quiet in our village. The River Ure frequently floods at a busy bridge near Wensley, choking off the morning commute in wet weather.

The forecast itself resembled a reverse of the Fast Show’s Spanish News Broadcast where the weather was always going to be “Scorchio” -shown here 2:42 (or 3/4) into the clip:

  1. Update: 14:50 this afternoon, the local school children were spotted being sent home early meaning that the water levels are rising again.

  2. Richmond schools also sent children home, a bus is caught in floods between Bedale and Catterick Garrison, the roads are somewhat damp at Wensley, Leyburn, Preston-under-Scar and in the Garrison… all these reports are by word-of-mouth.

    Damp is certainly it.

And many fire engines have been screaming up and down the road outside my office: can’t be fires, surely!

What is needed is not fire engines nor ambulances but the inshore lifeboats!
