Sarah Palin – Prospective Vice-President of the United States (or PVPUS)
Sarah Palin has accepted her nomination is running mate for Senator John S McCain in his bid to become president of the United States of America. She gave her first speech to the Republican Convention to accept the nomination in an “electrifying” address that has rocked the prospects of the Democrats. People who felt they were choosing between a black president and a female president now still have some choice that was taken away when Hilary Clinton was beaten by Barack Obama to be Democratic candidate.
Contrary to some reports, Barack Obama was not remiss in failing to select Hilary Clinton as his running mate. In her confident bid to be the democratic candidate for President, Hilary Clinton said that she would not run as vice-president. This policy was designed to head off those who would have suggested she step aised to let Obama win. It was an all-or-nothing gamble which didn’t pay off. Instead, Sarah Palin is now championing the place of women in office.
Sarah Palin is being painted as some sort of Lara Croft from Alaska – the most amusing example of creative political boundary drawing in the history of the world. Cut-off from America from its rightful owner, Canada, Alaska is all that stands between Eastern Russia and the Americas, which, in addition to its wealth of natural resources, makes it a political hotpoint. Palin is proud of hunting moose, riding jetskiis and being an all-round hick.
Aside from this, Sarah Palin is also a grass roots political player having risen from community politics to become Governor of Alaska. She is staunchly Republican and has had to defend her position on sex education after it was revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant to a self-confessed hockey redneck. She explains this as the hard road that must be trodden as the alternative to abortion and that all families have difficult times. Palin is anti-sex education and anti-abortion.
She also has a young son with Down’s Syndrome with some Republicans accusing her of being a bad mother by not spending more time with her family. I’m sure that male politicians with disabled children would not face the same criticism. The assumption is that women are solely responsible for their families. Why can’t her husband look after a baby with Down’s? Or give sufficient guidance to his teenage daughter to prevent her an unwanted pregnancy?
As it is, Sarah Palin is looking like a serious contender for the White House. Obama and his male running mate need to step up if they are going to control the most important office in world politics.
