A lot of people out there are looking for information on running for beginners.

For those people who are after a little info on how to start running, either from scratch, or after a long break (i.e year and years, like me), I wrote a little post the other day called “How To Start Running” that I think could help you a little.

But the main thing you need is motivation.

Learn what motivates you, and how to build and maintain your motivation.

One way to make sure you stay motivated is to run with a friend – or group.

Another sure fire way to get motivated, and keep motivated, is to make sure you don’t over exert yourself. There’s no better way to guarantee you won’t go running than to pick up an injury!

Start slowly. Build gradually. Enjoy yourself. It’s supposed to be fun!Similar Posts:

The other day I realised when talking to a few people that, despite what we might think, it is a little daunting thinking about getting back into fitness in our adult lives – even something most of us could do pretty easily as children, like running.

Because I have been running fairly consistently for the past 4 or 5 years – since giving up smoking and using it as the way to overcome massive mood swings and cravings (run until your can’t breathe, then you won’t want to smoke (or will be incapable) was the thinking, behind that one!), people tend to ask me “but how do you start running?”

Well, to put it bluntly, you just have to go!

That’s a little unhelpful, I know, so the first step you should take is to set aside time for running.

Unlike a lot of the advice I read, I’m going to say set aside some time every day (most advice says 2-3 times per week). The reason for this is simple: 1) a little and often will help you to get into a routine; 2) If your life is like mine, despite wanting / planning to go every day, you will miss 2-3 times per week due to outside influences, like work (or life) and will therefore end up going the recommended amount!

But the point is that unless you set this time aside, you’ll use it for doing things other than running, like watching television, getting drunk or eating cakes. Those things you can do the other 23 hours of the day. Put one hour aside.

Try to get out and get active for this hour. Whether you run or not in your first few days, you should get changed, go out, and walk or jog for a few minutes. Make it up to the hour you put aside. Then come home, have a shower and go on with your life.

Build slowly.

Be sensible.

I did find, however, that once I was able to run 5-10K without stopping, the next level was to enter a race. Entering a race puts the training into overdrive, as you build up to the event. Find something where people in your skill level will be competing, and aim to set down a marker in your first event.

Use a race calendar website to find a race in your area a month or two away, as this will help you to stay motivated to keep training.

Try to go running as often as you can.

If you have any questions about starting running, leave them below. I may not know the answer, but I do have a running coach who probably does (I now officially run far too much ).

Lastly, don’t overdo it, and don’t assume that advice suitable for other people (like me in my 20s) will necessarily be good for you, a person I have never met. Just take a sensible, slow, approach to starting running.

Don’t run before you can walk!

But it really is as simple as putting one leg in front of the other, briskly. And don’t listen to people who try to sell you lots of equipment and expensive stuff. That can wait until you are able to run at least 5 kilometers without stopping!Similar Posts:
