I wrote about how to build a business using freelancers earlier today – but what about freelancing as a writer? Do I advocate that? Well, the real answer to that one is “it depends”. To be successful as a freelance writer, you need to establish links with some good, quality, paying publications.

You also need to be prepared for long stints of little or no work, and periods of painfully intense writing. Jobs don’t just drift in when you are free, they hammer you when you are busy, then dry up for days (weeks, months) on end.

Freelance writing is tough. But it is rewarding. And it can make one a better writer.

The best way to improve your writing is to write.

There is little better feedback than being re-booked as a freelancer. If the work dries up, you could be doing something wrong…

Or the publication you were writing for has found someone approximately as good, for less money.
