The Ned Kelly Pie

Australians see bacon and eggs as their staple national food. An “Aussie Burger” involves bacon, eggs and beetroot whereas an “Aussie Breakfast” consists of eggs, bacon and toast. Nevertheless, we were very impressed with the innovation of a small bakery in Strathalbyn in the Adelaide Hills, who had come up with “The Ned Kelly Pie”. Filled with beef mince, nestling an egg in the middle, then topped with cheese, bacon and barbeque sauce, this pie was the stuff of legend. Whilst this delicacy may never attain the Heart Foundation’s tick of approval for its Pick the Tick campaign, it certainly has appeal to tourists and locals alike.
