Tuesday 31st July – Kingfisher Bay Resort, Dingoes and Hervey Bay

The drive to Kingfisher Bay was bumpy and long but nothing could prepare us for the state of the road on entry to the resort. The wooden boards had fallen to pieces and we crashed down the steep road at various extreme angles shaking the car violently from side to side.

We booked our ferry crossing and then took a walk to the ruined commando posts along the coast. On the way we met a dingo and promptly launched into our dingo-awareness training hammered into our consciousness at every turn on Fraser Island.

We stood back to back and moved slowly in case our canine friend was not alone. The previous night, we had been invited to join Emma and Nathan’s camp fire and were treated to a blow-by-blow account of how Nathan and his friends were attacked by a pack of 30-40 snarling dingoes. We were not about to pick a fight with this dog.

On the way back to Kingfisher we saw hundreds of blue soldier crabs along the beach. These are some of only a few crabs that can walk forwards as well as sideways. They congregate in large numbers to march along the beach, hence their title.

We stayed the night in Hervey Bay which is teeming with accommodation – no worries for late arrivals from the Fraser Island.

New video!

As of March 2008, we have finally got round to uploading all of our travelling footage from the Australian outback. Here’s the first -a close encounter with a dingo.

  2. [...] in dingo safety we managed to compose ourselves enough to film this encounter and put the video up here. We didn’t even panic too much when the dingo came straight at [...]
