Underground Tunnels near Arthur’s Seat
Edinburgh is full of secrets – underground streets, vaults, Freemason’s headquarters and tunnels everywhere. You would think that Arthur’s Seat, being a big lump of solid rock, would be immune to the scheming architecture of old developments, but you’d be wrong. In addition to a tunnel clearly visible from Holyrood Park, there is also an old railway tunnel which you can reach from the lower road which circles the park. On Old Church Lane, between the entrance to the park and Duddingston Loch, you can reach a cycle path which runs around the other side of the loch. That cycle path goes through a tunnel following a sign for the city centre. It brings you out in such an innocuous spot that you could believe that some of the local residents don’t even know it’s there. We hopped into it to escape a hailstorm and found the tunnel to last around half a mile or more. To make it event weirder, there was a group of girls singing songs from “Jesus Christ Superstar” as we crept into the underbelly of Edinburgh’s past. See the pictures below:

You mention the Innocent Tunnel.—but what is more interesting is the entrance to a tunnel on the road (which circles Arthurs Seat high up.) It has a locked solid metal door and is only about 2.5 feat high. This is clearly visible on the south west side of the hill. There used to be an identical door on the north east side but that was taken away when they widened the road.RR
